| The Canadian Energy Research Institute
(CERI) is an independent, non-profit research institute committed
to excellence in the analysis of energy economics and related
environmental policy issues in the producing, transportation,
and consuming sectors.
CERI was founded in 1975. The parties which sponsor the Institute
today are:
The Institute's principal mandate is to conduct studies to
assist industry and government parties in finding solutions
to energy problems and formulating practical energy policies.
Studies are selected by a Board of Directors which represents
the sponsor organizations. CERI is staffed by experts in many
facets of energy economics and draws on leading authorities
in many countries in order to provide accurate information
about energy resources and emerging trends and issues.
Another important role played by CERI is the development
of expertise in the analysis of a broad range of energy issues.
Since the Institute began operation, some forty CERI research
staff members have gained experience and gone on to take up
careers in government and industry.
A central goal of the Canadian Energy Research Institute
is to build bridges between scholarship and policy, bringing
the insights of scientific research, economic analysis, and
practical experience to the attention of government policy-makers,
business sector decision-makers, the media, and citizens in
Canada and abroad. CERI staff are assisted in these endeavours
by independent research forums comprised of recognized experts
in the fields of oil, gas, coal, electricity and alternate
fuels.
In an effort to broaden public understanding of the major
forces shaping the global energy environment and Canadian
energy policy, the Canadian Energy Research Institute regularly
publishes and distributes research reports and studies; holds
seminars, conferences, and briefings, and offers materials
for use by print and broadcast media. CERI studies are made
available to the Institute's sponsors, including all members
of the Private Sector Sponsors of the Canadian Energy Research
Institute and international associate sponsors, without charge.
The monthly Geopolitics of Energy report and the Natural Gas
Market Watch are provided to representatives of the Institute's
public sector sponsors and to companies with Private Sector
Sponsors of the Canadian Energy Research Institute membership
commitments on a complimentary basis.
Each CERI study involves the active participation of an advisory
committee. Such committees provide expert advice on the content
of research reports. Individuals comprising the committees
are not identified in CERI research publications. This allows
expert input and opinion without compromising the objectivity
of participants. The interpretation and findings set forth
in CERI publications are those of the author(s), who maintain
sole responsibility for the content.
Recent publications released by CERI examined: the Alberta
electricity market; basis points at Eastern hubs and the impact
of gas from Sable Island; the restructuring of the electricity
and natural gas industries and market and price convergence;
the outlook for Western Canada crude oil production; natural
gas deliverability in Canada; supply costs for Canadian crude
oil sources; and an evaluation for the potential for the steam
assisted gravity drainage process. Studies in progress include:
the market outlook for Canadian natural gas liquids; the market
potential for bitumen-based feedstocks; and an update of the
North American natural gas outlook.
Complementing the research on domestic and continental energy
and environmental issues is an expanding international research
program. Studies completed in this area include: historical
assessment and outlook for the oil industry of the former
Soviet Union; economic and environmental considerations in
power sector development in India; integration of Mexico into
the continental North American natural gas market; a 3-volume
study on the petroleum industry in Latin America; and a study
dealing with natural gas market developments in South America.
CERI is also engaged as Executing Agency for a five-year,
CIDA-financed institutional strengthening program between
Canada and the Government of Colombia.
