| Research Director
The Canadian Energy Research Institute is looking for a Research Director to lead a small team of economists and other staff in carrying out economic research and analysis and provide a source of economic and energy sector expertise and advice to support and development of the organizations research agenda. You are a self-starter, capable of defining and carrying out complex analysis and interested in working in a dynamic team environment. Candidates should have an advanced degree in Economics, Finance or Engineering and significant experience in economic analysis and research. Experience in leading a professional team is a definite asset. A thorough knowledge and understanding of the Canadian energy industry and the oil sands sector in particular is required. A high level of research, analysis and interpersonal skills is also required. Candidates must have exceptional writing and speaking skills and a desire to engage the media on an ongoing basis. Detailed job responsibilities include the following:

Supervise a small team of economists and support staff, ensuring that they are appropriately trained and motivated and carry out their responsibilities to the required standards.

Develop and implement economic research methods and work processes to ensure that a high standard of service is provided to the organization.

Assist in the development of the organization’s research agenda to ensure that these support the overall mission and objectives.

Assist in the implementation of the organization’s research agenda and communicate clearly, concisely, and accurately the agenda to other staff and external stakeholders (i.e., sponsors).

Maintain and develop a comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of Canada’s oil sands sector, including the latest production methods and developments, pipeline and transportation issues, and other local, national, and international issues that could impact the sector.

Maintain and develop up-to-date knowledge of the global oil industry, while maintaining and developing broad knowledge of the energy sector (i.e., natural gas).

Carry out economic research and analysis in identified sectors and communicate results to the organization, sponsor companies, media, and other stakeholders.

Review all research reports and publications to ensure a high degree of accuracy, clarity, readability, and integrity.

Respond to enquiries from the President and relevant external bodies (media, public, oil and gas industry) relating to developments in the organization and the energy sector.

Produce publications and use a variety of communications to ensure that managers and staff are kept up-to-date with developments in the energy sector, with particular emphasis on the oil sands.

Develop and maintain contacts with external sources to ensure that the best possible information is gained and to provide effective advice to managers and staff.

Represent the organization at external meetings and conferences on economic issues, ensuring that a positive image of the organization is promoted.

Maintain a comprehensive database of relevant oil sands information.
